New(ton) All-Weather Shoe

For those of you who love the ventilation of the current Newton Running Shoes, but get cold feet when the thermometer drops below freezing, Sir Isaac has been hard at work in the R&D lab over the last year perfecting an all weather road shoe.

This product combines some unique technologies and developments. In addition to an improved lug system, the materials in the shoe have been tuned to perform in cold weather (to our knowledge, no other shoe has been built for temperature like this). This includes a windproof upper, softer bottom unit (below your feet), more compliant membrane supporting the lugs, reflective logo and bilateral posting.

Bilateral posting provides support for the 80% of us who pronate OR supinate, and the cushioning you find in neutral shoes. Some clever thinking by Danny Abshire, Newton Running’s resident development genius, and harsh wear testing revealed that all runners, regardless of their foot strike benefit from bilateral posting. We will have a limited release of the shoe in early winter, so stay tuned for more.

For now, here’s sneak peak at one of the models.

Here’s the shoe in the dark …

    When???

  3. Ian says:

We will have these available this winter … for now we are continuing our wear and mechanical testing to make sure the new materials meet out 1,000 mile endurance requirement.

  4. Van says:

Wow, what an awesome concept, I can’t wait!

  5. Pat says:

I’d love a pair of these. I hope we get some here in Calgary, Canada

I got tired of waiting for newtonrunning to update their product line so after 7 pairs of newtons and many miles I bought the new balance 800 mid strike shoe.
Its nice but its heavy and the midfoot cushioning could be better. I can tell ya one thing, as soon as the newton winter shoe is out I’m buying it and switching back to newtons. I dunno what I was thinking.
Hurry up guys! I would like to use the new winter shoe now for the fall. Why wait till winter?

Saw the display model at IM WI. This will be my shoe for the winter and slushy spring. Bilateral post idea is great and can not wait to try it as I am a combo runner – pronate a bit with my left and supinate with the right. If it works, would be great to see in the stability trainer and racer as well.

Hurry up with the all weather shoe! It’s gonna start raining here soon in Seattle and I need dry feet!

  9. Danny says:

Is this the same as the trail shoe I’ve heard murmurings of, or is that a separate project? Any word on when that might show up?

  10. Olternaut says:

    @Danny:

Apparently their trail shoe will be a seperate project. No word yet on when it will debut. Supposedly it will be soon.

  11. Ian says:

The All Weather (Winter) and Trail shoes are indeed different projects. The All Weather will be available in late fall, the Trail in spring.

We just returned from Korea and Hawaii (way to go Craig!) and have the All Weather confirmed and heading into production. Our development cycle is quite short but our testing is long as we want to be ABSOLUTELY certain the shoe is the best it can be.

One thing to note is that the shoe is not seam sealed and water proof, it is water repellant and resistant. After much debate and feedback from retailers and users we went with water repellant (treated) fabric. This has the advantages of maintaining exceptional breathability without a price hike.

  12. Danny says:

@Ian Thanks for the insight. Not really in need of the all-weather version, but a trail version would be right up my alley. Are they on the same development timeline, or are they “next” once the All Weather shoes are done? Or can you even say?

Somewhere I thought I read that the trail shoes would be ready by fall, but I could be mistaken. I’m also really interested to see how the actuator lugs will be worked into the trail shoes (or if they will) since they seem like they might get in the way a little of footwork/balance on rough terrain…

I would also love to see some trail shoes soon. I mainly run on trails so having a newton trail version would be real nifty.

Ian – any update on when and where the new AW model will be available? Can you share any info on how many different models will be offered? Looking forward to this one. Btw, nice job identifying an unmet need for a winter performance shoe.

  15. Ian says:

Hi All, my apologies for this extremely tardy check into the blog. As you are no doubt aware the Motion All Weather is a little late in delivery. Never fear, they will land in the US very soon and we’ll hustle them out to retailers as soon as they hit the deck. You can also order them on-line and will be the first to get them on your feet.

  16. Richard Moore says:

Please bring back the All Weather shoe!! There is nothing better for Chicago winters and this shoe was awesome!! The new trail shoe does not compare. Sorry. The All Weather is greatly needed. Please bring them back!!!

  17. Ian says:

We are working on a replacement fro 2011 with improved traction and stability.
