Sean McElveen did us proud on the streets of Boulder on Thursday night. Dashing down Pearl Street in a pair of Newton racers, the 10-year-old speedster ran away with the Kids’ 1.5K race of the West End 3K event. Using a furious finishing kick, McElveen cruised to the win in 5:41 as he outran Bill Dixon (5:47) and Chris Nelson (5:55).

Fourth place finisher at Ironman Lake Placid, Mike Caiazzo from Westbrook, Maine, pictured here at about mile 14 of the marathon.  The weather held today.  It rained during part of the swim, but conditions were a little warm, cloudy and humid with a breeze for the balance of the day, but dry.

Also pictured is Robert Dennis, Newton Running’s West Coast Regional Account Manager. Robert is hammering out the run after a bike leg where his pedal came off.  Anything can happen.  Way to go, Robert!

We counted 247 pairs of Newton on the course today.

Newton Pro Dennis Meeker preparing for Lake Placid IM

Newton Running pro, Dennis Meeker, stops by to say “hi” at our expo booth in Lake Placid.  He plans to compete on Sunday.  Meanwhile, the Newton crew has kept busy in Lake Placid.  We’ve had some great weather most of the week– until today.  Luckily, we were able to make good use of the lime green Newton umbrellas that we brought along.  We’ve already spotted quite a few athletes in Newtons and are getting excited for race day on Sunday– hopefully we’ll have sunny skies!

This just in from Badwater-Pam Reed finishes second!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Stephen Gartside (our pres.) just sent us this update from Mt. Whitney, the finish line at the Badwater Ultramarathon.

“Pam got 7th place overall with a total time of 29 hours and 2 minutes.  Pam was the second place female behind Jamie Donaldson of Colorado.  Pam did awesome and ran strong the whole race.  I’ve been up for 37 hours.  Going to eat and going to bed.  The finish line is open until tomorrow afternoon, so many competitors will still be out on the course for many hours.  There are finishing pictures on the Badwater, Adventure Corps web site.

Sun burned.  Ran a few miles too.  Great time and fun crew. Way to go Pam!

Real Person Review: “From heel striker to forefoot runner – why I love my Newtons”

Friday, July 10th, 2009

We just came across this terrific post from Johnny Hammond, a 43-year-old age-grouper triathlete and runner in the UK. It’s an interesting story about his nagging running injuries and how his transition to forefoot running and Newtons has dramatically helped.

“At the beginning of my winter training this year, I started training with a new Triathlon Coach who wanted me to change my running style from heel striker to forefoot running. He said it would increase my speed and running efficency, and reduce my risk of injury. I was apprehensive at first and questioned his judgement. I’d struggled with a left shin splint injury for the past 3 years and had gone to a lot of expense to get special orthotics and the right running trainers to try and ward off this recurring injury. But, I was still finding it hard to run longer distances without my shin splint (left tib post to be precise) flaring up, so I decided to give forefoot running a go.

At first, I found it really hard to run on my forefoot without my heels dropping so my coach suggested that I invest in pair of Newtons, initially as a training aid. He told me that the Newtons would ‘put me up’ onto my forefoot and help me to progress from heel striker to forefoot runner. I’d also heard the buzz about Newtons on the Triathlon circuit and decided to find out what all the fuss was about. £120 later and I was sporting a pair of lightweight orange and white Newton Distance S trainers, a far cry from my bulky motion control Asics running shoes (also £100 plus shoes).”

A Newton Model

Monday, July 6th, 2009

tory

If you’ve paid attention to the triathlon mags recently you might have spotted the cameo our Distance S shoes are making in this cool Garneau full-page ad. What you might not have realized is that the model wearing the shoes is Newton’s own queen of customer service, Tory Oakland. Tory is an accomplished triathlete and all around bad ass athlete when she’s not helping out Newton’s customers (or modelling). You can also find Tory at many of our race expos hanging out at the Newton booth – make sure to ask her for an autograph next time you see her.

(I’m going to find a place to hide now since Tory is totally going to kick my butt for posting this).
