Newtons are so in VOGUE

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Newton shoes, with their bright, neon colors have been a hit in the fashion mags. We’ve already been featured in both Vogue and InStyle magazines earlier this year. This month, we’ve achieved a fashion magazine coup that will likely never be repeated! We’re in both Vogue and Men’s Vogue magazines. Sadly, it sounds like the December issue might be the final issue we’ll ever see of the Men’s Vogue. Click here and here to see scans of the coverage but better to buy the issues yourself :-)

Heel-Strike Convert

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I am a 58-year-old former heel striker, living on Cape Cod. It
took me about a month to transition to my new Newton shoes.
Since then, my racing delta has changed from about 7:45 to 7:10 minute miles, with less expenditure of energy. These shoes have totally changed my running enjoyment.
I think you need a training CD with each shoe sale (ed. note, check out our videos on YouTube, with more on the way).
I just happened to see a triathlon video on forefoot landing, just before
 getting your shoes.
I would never had made the transition without the video.
I believe my best races are ahead of me! My regular running buddies are a little grumpy with me.
This has been the easiest way to gauge my running improvement; I’m now running
 with the next fastest group!
Regards,
Paul

Motion AW Update

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Hi all-

I know many of you have already pre-ordered your Motion All-Weather shoes and you’re anxiously awaiting their arrival. Unfortunately, the shipment has been delayed by a week so we’re now expecting them to arrive here in Boulder on approximately December 5. We’re going to work late to get them out the door right away once they get here. We’re sincerely sorry about the delay, but we promise, these shoes are worth the wait!

Not completely lost in translation

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Our terrific Japanese distributor just sent us the below scan (click image to enlarge) from the January issue of Triathlon Japan magazine. None of us speak Japanese so we have no idea what it says, but judging by the great photos it looks like a terrific review. They even cut open one of the shoes to see the Action/Reaction Technology up close. We’ll post a translation once we get it.

Newtons go Beach2Battleship

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Newton Crew,

I heard about Newton running shoes through a good friend back in March. I had previously finished a couple of marathons in another brand of shoes and was open to try something new. I immediately bought a pair of Gravity trainers knowing I was about to start training for my first iron distance triathlon. As I anticipated, I was stoked on the shoes and the brand. My 24 week training program began in May. The Beach2Battleship full iron distance was my ultimate goal. I logged 25-45 miles a week during the entire training period. I said it over and over after my long runs, my track workouts, etc…”my legs feel great compared to running in other shoe brands.”

With November 1st approaching I bought a new pair of gravity’s to have for race day. All the training came down to the 7 am mass start channel swim. The weather was perfect…ended up in the low 70’s with no wind, perfect Carolina blue skies. The race was going as planned; less than 1 hour on the swim, steady 6 hours on the bike and I got off the bike with the marathon on my mind. I ran into transition, put on my Newton’s and headed out. Again I was heading out into the unknown. I had finished a couple 70.3 events and a couple marathons but never the 140.6…I turned around at the half way point saying “this is it…13.1 to go”…just like doing those training runs on tired legs…I came running down the finish chute feeling strong and crossed the line just before sunset with the clock reading 10:48:29…I did it…my first iron distance event! My legs felt nothing like the previous marathons I had run. I felt great! My run split was 3:43:29…basically 6 minutes off my marathon PR! I owe my race success to Newton running shoes and the Newton crew for making such a superior product. The gravity trainer was huge part of my race from week 1 of my training to the finish line. I am sold on Newton running shoes. I can not wait to tackle my next challenge in them…

Since the iron distance triathlon my success with Newton shoes has continued. I ran my 5k PR in the gravity’s this past weekend…18.57…Newton’s Rock!

Thank you,

John ‘MO’

Norseman in Newtons

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

We got the below testimonial from Elizabeth in our inbox yesterday. I’ve never heard of the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Eidfjord, Norway, so I did a little homework. The term ‘extreme’ gets tossed about quite a bit these days, but after reading about the Norseman, I’m convinced it’s the real deal and I’m very impressed with Elizabeth’s performance. A few Norseman facts I learned:

–The race begins at 5am with a 3.8K swim in the Hardangerfjord. Racers jump off the back of a boat for the for the water start.

–Next is a 180K bike leg, which includes a brutal 4,000 foot climb at the end.

–Finally, there’s a 42K run, which ends with a ridiculous 5K, 6,000 foot climb to the top of the Gaustatoppen.

–After finishing at the top of the mountain, you have to walk back down, in the dark, after 140 miles and 20 hours of racing.

–Oh, and those Euros aren’t afraid to get buck naked at the race transitions.

Well, I think the Norseman certainly lives up to its billing as the world’s hardest triathlon and we’re duly impressed that Elizabeth was there, rocking her Newtons to a great finish!

Here’s her story:

I just wanted to let someone know about my great experience in Newton trainers in the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon this summer. As a long-time runner and triathlon convert, I’ve been running in Newton trainers and racing shoes for just over a year. I love the way they feel, and have seen a huge improvement on hills, which have always been a weakness of mine. And within a week of using Newtons, they seem to have cured a long-time nagging injury in my left ankle.

But the true test of my Newtons was in the Norseman triathlon this summer. This iron-distance event finishes on the summit of a 6,000 foot peak. The run climbs 10% grades on the road, then finishes with about 3.5 miles on a rocky trail to the summit. My Newtons were amazing! They made the transition from flat road to steep grade and even rocky trail perfectly, giving my feet plenty of support without weighing them down. As one of the handful of women to finish on the summit that day, and the only one over 40, I attribute some of that success to the outstanding performance of my Newtons on race day, and the way they helped me train injury-free as I prepared for the race.

Thank you for making such an outstanding product! I look forward to trying the new all-weather version as I log a lot of miles in rough terrain and in the snow.

I want to go to Wanaka!

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Newton Running has just signed on to be a sponsor of the Challenge Wanaka, an iron distance triathlon in Lake Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand.

Challenge Wanaka bills itself as “The World’s Most Scenic Long Distance Triathlon.” That’s a bold statement to be sure, but after checking the race website and the Lake Wanaka tourism bureau site, Sir Isaac thinks maybe he should travel to NZ to see for himself, especially as a new winter storm bears down on chilly Colorado.

Newton athletes Chris McDonald and Hilary Biscay both placed second in this race last year. I haven’t heard if they’re returning to the race this year, but if so, I’m putting my money on another double Newton victory at the Challenge Wanaka!

Team Semper Fi – OooRaah!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Team Semper Fi is a sports program that supports marines, sailors and soldiers injured in combat and training. Team Semper Fi provides coaches, specialized sporting equipment, entry fees and travel expenses for the wounded team members.

Newton Running has been a proud sponsor of Team Semper Fi for over a year now, working with the athletes to provide custom shoes for injured soldiers. Check out this inspirational note that just showed up in our inbox:

Two weeks ago, I finished the Marine Corps Marathon alongside three members of Team Semper Fi. They were each wearing Newton shoes. 4 shoes among the 3 men. The reason is that two of the Marines were wearing Cheetah Prosthetics on one leg each. I decided I would look up Newton and if you support Team Semper Fi, I would in turn throw my running shoe money your way. I have to commend you for your support of those men. You should have seen them crossing the finish line with 5,000 screaming spectators. It was awesome. You should’ve seen the way they cheered each other and indeed the other runners along the entire course. It was one of the greatest athletic events I’ve ever been a part of.

Your shoes are priced a little high for my budget. But your support of Team Semper Fi makes it worth the extra money. I’m not the slightest bit disappointed in my current brand (Saucony). But your support of such great charities makes me want to support you more than other companies.

I look forward to trying out a new pair of Newtons really soon. And I look forward to supporting Team Semper Fi just like you do for the forseeable future. I served for 8 years in the Corps and now I like to think if I can continue to help the Marines who gave of their blood to this country, I can continue to earn and keep the title “Marine”.

If anyone has a photo of this finish line moment, we’d love to see it…there’s Newton shwag in it for you.
